The New York Times reported on 8/27/00 that the building on which the sign was painted (772 Eighth Ave.) was built in 1873 and owned by Fred Schmuck. The adjacent building (776 Eighth Ave.) was built in 1897. According to Kevin Walsh of Forgotten-NY, "the ad had to have been painted sometime during the 24 year period between 1873 & 1897, since 776 has covered the ad since 1897."
